Q: What would you recommend that a man wear to a Hawaiian wedding in the summertime? J.G. – San Jose, CA
A: Given that it will be hot and humid, and depending upon the celebration’s level of formality, your choices could be as laid back as linen or as tony as tropical weight wool. Consider the time of day and the venue when deciding what you’ll wear. Wool isn’t what you’d wear to the beach, for example, and you might not go to a very fancy event without a jacket, no matter what time of year it is. When in doubt, dress a step above where you think you should.
Q: Any suggestions about buying new shoes? G.P. – San Jose, CA
A: Buying shoes is a matter of timing. If you shop for shoes in the morning, new shoes should be slightly roomy; in the early afternoon those shoes should have a perfect fit; by late afternoon they should be a bit snug. Feet heat up and swell during the day, so keep this tip in mind as you fancy some new footwear.
Q: I’m a senior level marketing manager in a high tech firm and haven’t shopped in years and it shows. What should I do? M.K. – Mountain View, CA
A: It’s crucial to have a wardrobe core that consists of the essentials. If your work environment is casual, you need several pairs of versatile trousers and a sport coat that you can count on, in case you need it. Then layer in shirts that can be worn with the pants and jacket you select. These essential elements of your wardrobe are definitely the first place to start. Take updating your wardrobe in manageable steps and you’ll look senior level again in no time.
Q: My girlfriend was buying all of my clothes but we recently split up. Should I ask her to keep shopping for me? J.S. – San Francisco, CA
A: I suggest that you shop for yourself. Women have their own motives for clothing their men. I know since I’ve been dressing men for almost 18 years! Those motives are typically terrific as long as the couple is together and happy. Depend upon yourself and others will see you as yourself. Take the break up as an opportunity to have a fresh start, in your heart and on your sleeve.
